Managing press releases

Posthog, the open source product OS, is committed to delivering key messages effectively and maintaining a positive impact. The company uses a clear set of guidelines to manage press releases, ensuring both seamless communication of significant news and effective representation of the brand.

The process begins by defining objectives and communication strategies, ensuring a clear purpose for each press release. Two weeks before the release, the team works diligently to finalize key messages and the initial draft of the press release. Posthog's preference for a single media partner on an exclusive basis ensures a high-quality and impactful story, aligning with their early-stage vision.

One week prior to the release, the press release is polished and shared exclusively with the chosen media partner. On the day of release, the team takes great care to check the media partner's story, ensuring its accuracy before proceeding with widespread distribution across multiple channels.

Managing press releases

From time to time, we may have significant company news that we want to release via the press, in addition to our usual channels. This is usually for significant company milestones such as funding rounds.

We have a simple process to ensure that any press releases go smoothly.

First steps

  1. Write up objectives and comms strategy - what is the purpose of the press release? What key message(s) are we trying to get across?
  2. Set an approximate target date

Two weeks before release

  1. Confirm key messages and write first draft press release
  2. Finalize target date
  3. Pitch and secure a media exclusive - our investors can help with this
  4. Secure approval for any third party involvement, e.g. quotes we want to use

We currently prefer working with a single media partner on an exclusive basis, as we believe a single, high-quality story is more impactful than taking a broad approach, given our current early stage.

One week before release

  1. Finalize press release and share with exclusive media partner
  2. Any media prep if interviews have been scheduled

On the day of release

  1. Wait for the media partner's story to go live first! Check it carefully and ask for any errors to be amended before proceeding with the below...
  2. Push out the press release via BusinessWire
  3. Submit via YC's social media request from
  4. James to post on his personal LinkedIn (and tag all relevant people)
  5. Post in our PostHog Users Slack
  6. Post in YC Slack
  7. Write post on our blog about the news
  8. Post on PostHog Twitter (and tag all relevant people)
  9. Share links to all of the above to the PostHog team so they can share
  10. Update any relevant online company profiles; Crunchbase, Pitchbook, Glassdoor.
